Șumuleu-Ciuc

With its unique collection of artifacts, the statue of St. Mary the most valuable among them, Sumuleu-Ciuc is the most famous pilgrimage site in Transylvania. The statue of Miraculous Mary or Weeping Mary or Lady of the Sun is a masterpiece of religious art from the sixteenth century. The statue, carved from linden tree, illustrates the Virgin Mary holding Baby Jesus with a golden crown on his forehead. Carved in the Renaissance style, at a height of 227 centimeters, it is estimated to be the largest grace statue in the world.

”The statue of St. Mary of Csíksomlyó is believed to have descended from the sky after the Battle of Mohács so that she could help the Szeklers in need. She warned them of menaces, healed the sick, and raised the dead.”
