The city lies at the head of the Olt River, the southern foot of Hasmasul Mare (1793 m). Due to its rare vegetation and topography, the area between Bălan and the Red Lake was designated a national park in 1990. The nearby Lonely Rock is a postcard image of the Hășmașu Mare Mountains.
